Jannis Varelas: Marlow's Dreams
Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, a masterpiece of Modernist literature, and handcrafted colourful rugs. Could these two have anything in common? In his latest exhibition Marlows’ Dreams - on display at Keramikos’ major art scene player The Breeder gallery - artist Jannis Varelas draws inspiration from the book’s anti-hero, Marlow, and his descent into the dark heart of humanity, to weave - pun intended - the tapestry of its inner workings into rugs. The rugs, created in collaboration with Art Rug Projects by Soutzoglou with silk and wool, are essentially 3D landscapes in bright colours, evocative of exotic destinations and ambiguous figures. Varelas’ bronze sculptures and artworks on paper complete what is considered to be one of the most exciting works to date from the talented Greek visual artist.
