Jordi Savall at the Athens Concert Hall
Conductor and composer Jordi Savall has played a central role in reviving interest in viols since the 1970s. What’s a viol you may ask? Also called viola da gamba, it’s a lesser-known relative of the violin family that originated in 15th-century Spain and gained popularity during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Its prevalence faded out in the 18th century but Savall and his orchestra are set to change that. For their performance at the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron) they are joined by the women's section of the National Choir of Catalonia. The programme highlights two important symphonic compositions by Felix Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 4 in A major, Opus 90, known as the "Italian," and Ein Sommernachstraum (A Midsummer Night's Dream).
