Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk
Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, the iconic 20th century opera and Dmitri Shostakovich’s breathtaking masterpiece, returns to the Greek National Opera after popular demand. Before coming to be considered as one of the most popular works of the 20th century, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk was banned by the Stalinist authorities. The opera, based on a novella by Nikolai Leskov, highlights the role of women in provincial pre-revolutionary Russia. The plot follows the wife of a wealthy merchant, Katerina Ismailova, who, trapped in her marriage, falls in love with a worker. She ends up killing both her husband and father-in-law for her new love. The new couple is caught shortly after, but on their journey to Siberia, the pair is washed away by the frigid river waters. Shostakovich’s music and the all-star international creative team behind it promise to make this opera night an unforgetable one.
