Marianna Lourba: Spring Equinox
Discover Marianna Lourba's first solo exhibition, Spring Equinox, at Roma Gallery in upmarket Kolonaki. Over the course of two years, Lourba has created a collection of artworks using layers of acrylic-painted wood, paper and even integrated LED lights, with a focus on strong colours and intriguing shapes. A recurring semicircular motif appears throughout the exhibition, morphing into different images such as intertwined bodies, faces meeting, or perhaps a drawn curtain, revealing the contrast between day and night, light and darkness. Very fitting for its title.
In Lourba's art, the transition from one piece to the next is seamless. Her rich palette, inspired by the Greek landscape, captures the essence of the land, from dark red fiery sunsets to the iconic blue of the sky and sea - though white is the silent protagonist here, tying all the pieces/myths together. In her evocative titles, Lourba explores a world of myth and experience, referencing legendary islands such as Circe's Aeaea and ancient ships such as Jason's Argo, stowing the visitor half-way between myth and reality. The exhibition is curated by art historian Christoforos Marinos.
