Museum of Cycladic Art: Homecoming
Ever feel homesick travelling or living abroad? Tell that to the statues over at the Museum of Cycladic Art; they haven't been home in 7000 years! The exhibition “Homecoming. Cycladic treasures on their return journey” presents, for the first time internationally, 15 Cycladic antiquities of unique archeological value. This world premiere exhibition foreshadows the gradual return to Greece of the 161 Early Cycladic antiquities of the American collector Leonard Stern after their exhibition at the MET (New York).
Within the neoclassical building of the museum—the Stathatos Mansion—the figurines are displayed in three rooms made more "homey" by lighting filtered through delicate translucent fabric. While wandering among them, you'll probably feel intimidated by their stiff posture and mysterious eyes, but also strangely familiar with their destiny: they sure took the long way home (but is there such a thing as a short one?)
After your visit, make sure to go check the permanent collection, browse through the very well stocked bookstore, or take a break at the Museum Art Café which has a light-filled atrium and a yummy menu.
