My Fair Lady
Hands up if you knew that one of Broadway’s biggest hits of all time – My Fair Lady – was inspired by a Greek myth? George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, which in turn inspired Lerner & Loewe’s roaring 1956 musical (which in turn inspired Hollywood’s Oscar-winning version with Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn ... hello, are you still with us?), preserves Ovid’s ancient fable of the sculptor Pygmalion. Woman-wary Pygmalion fell in love with his own statue of female perfection, Galatea, and rendered her incarnate with a kiss. Now, the Greek National Opera has added their own twist. The quest of snobby linguistics professor Henry Higgins to transform scruffy flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a lady of refinement moves to a saucy cabaret drawn straight out of Toulouse Lautrec’s paintings and Bob Fosse’s back catalogue. Yes, the cultural politics may have shifted a lot since Lerner & Loewe’s day - but those wonderful songs like I Could Have Danced All Night? They’ll probably always have us tapping our toes. (Greek performance with English sub-titles.)
