NEON City Project 2024 | Iris Touliatou: Before and After Science
NEON, a cultural organisation known for spicing up the city's public spaces with contemporary art, has teamed up with the National Hellenic Research Foundation for their City Project 2024. This year, they've commissioned Iris Touliatou to create an art installation that's set up in and around the Foundation’s building. The exhibition is scattered around the outdoor areas, the lobby, and the Library of Science, Technology, and Culture at the Research Foundation. The title, Before and After Science, is borrowed from a Brian Eno album, and perfectly sums up the mix of live, hands-on creativity (in vivo) and more controlled, lab-like experimentation (in vitro). Touliatou's work integrates seamlessly into the day-to-day operations of the Foundation. That means you’ll see objects, protocols, and even some quirky services and broadcasts as part of your visit. It’s like the Foundation's usual hustle and bustle has been transformed into a living, breathing art piece. The artist is known for her multi-disciplinary approach, reshaping and redistributing everyday objects and systems to make us think about how we live and interact. Her art, which touches on economics, human relationships, and even mundane things like maintenance and repairs, gives a new perspective on our daily lives.
