New Year's Eve in Athens
The countdown is on. The Municipality of Athens has unveiled its festive agenda for the holiday season and it's a (Christmas) cracker. There's open-air film screenings of classic movies, light installations in historic promenades, a pop-up illusionary museum, extra glossy decorations, tonnes of free family activities, a 3D projection mapping at the Hellenic Parliament—and more than 50 gigs all across town. The real countdown however, is the one taking place on New Year's Eve at the very heart of Athens, Syntagma Square. Athens' mayor Kostas Bakoyannis will start counting backwards to midnight, then give way to some of the hottest local bands, artists and DJs who'll usher in the new decade against a backdrop of fireworks and glittering spectacles. There's plenty of room around Syntagma Square for everyone and anyone to come dance, sing and celebrate.
