Otello by Robert Wilson
Love. Schemes. Jealousy. Murder. Suicide. You would give it a try on Netflix, wouldn’t you? Well, Shakespeare got there first and Verdi changed opera forever with his next to last work, Otello. Add to the recipe the contemporary legend Robert Wilson and you have a performance not to miss.
In his first collaboration with Greek National Opera, Wilson brings, as usual, breathtaking lighting, minimal yet dramatic images, remarkable costumes and fierce stage make up. The sheer force of this passionate opera makes you wonder about some pretty hefty and timeless issues concerning social constructions and inner conflict. How does it feel to be a foreigner? Who can you trust? What does prestige mean to you? If Wilson can throw light on these weighty questions, the least we can do is go along and ponder the answers for ourselves at the always wonderful Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre.
