Our Flags, Glorious Fabrics, Markings of History
Just in time for the Greek National Holiday on March 25th, when Greeks commemorate the Greek War of Independence, the Municipality of Athens and the Organisation for Culture, Sport and Youth of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA) present an exciting new exhibition.
Titled Our Flags, Glorious Fabrics, Markings of History, the exhibition is a treasure trove of some 50 historic flags. Each with its own symbolic tale, they mark key moments in Greek history, from antiquity to the introduction of the iconic blue and white flag in 1822.
These flags, which are housed in various museums around the world, cannot normally be moved due to their historical value and significance, so this is a very special treat for the vexillophiles out there (that means flag buffs, we checked).
Alongside the collection of original flags, visitors can also see the work of visual artist Marili Charami, who meticulously reproduces these flags using linen, natural dyes and ancient techniques. From banners to pennants, each tells a story of courage, resilience and the collective effort of countless individuals in the fight for freedom.
Come to the opening on March 14th at 7pm for a guided tour and live music by The City of Athens Greek Music Workshop.
