Our Sacred Beauty: Byzantine icons from Thessaloniki
Athens has its share of beautiful Byzantine churches and sights to discover. But Thessaloniki, Greece's second biggest city, always had a stronger bond with the Byzantine legacy. Thessaloniki's history, art and architecture are strongly influenced by Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire. On a religious level, the two cities created a vast heritage of Christian artwork and icons. Our Sacred Beauty, an impressive collection of icons from Thessaloniki, is being exhibited at the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens offering a unique view of the craftsmanship and iconography during 1200-1500 AD. Centuries-old icons and never-before-seen ones are among the collection, so a certain amount of reverence is guaranteed.
