Parklife 2024
This summer, the vibrant pulse of Havana and the eclectic spirit of the New Weird America movement will converge in Athens for two live shows, as part of the eagerly anticipated Parklife concert series at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre. The first acts announced are the legendary Buena Vista All Stars and the visionary Devendra Banhart. There’s also a rocking tribute to Queen by the National Symphony Orchestra.
During the 90s, the Buena Vista Social Club revitalised the traditional sounds of Cuba, capturing hearts around the world with their music. Now, the Buena Vista All Stars, featuring some of Cuba's most illustrious contemporary musicians, carry this legacy forward. Under the direction of Grammy award winner Juan De Marcos Gonzalez and orchestra director Demetrio Muñiz, the ensemble, which includes talents like Ibrahim Ferrer Jr. Rubén González, and Danay Suarez, will transport audiences to the heart of Latin America with their world tour, Una Noche en La Habana (One Night in Havana).
After nearly two decades, Devendra Banhart returns to Athens, bringing his unique blend of folk, psychedelic, and experimental music. Once a torchbearer of the freak-folk scene, Banhart has evolved into a genre-defying artist whose work continues to inspire and captivate. His performance will feature songs from his extensive discography, including tracks from his latest album, Flying Wig. Prepare for a night of introspective melodies and emotional storytelling.
The National Symphony Orchestra and the Choir of ERT will blend the classical grandeur of a full orchestra with legendary anthems that defined the world of music. Imagine the spine-tingling power of Bohemian Rhapsody and the unyielding drive of The Show Must Go On in a rock opera extravaganza, for a night dedicated to one of rock music's most iconic bands, Queen.
