Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus
Prometheus' tale of rebellion is a tale whose origin is lost in time. Greek myth has it that Prometheus stole the fire from Mount Olympus and gave it to mankind invoking the wrath of Zeus who bound him to a rock. Despite the advice and sympathy of several Greek gods, Prometheus is sent into the abyss, taking his secret on Zeus' future downfall with him—he claims that a future marriage of Zeus will lead to a stronger offspring that will dethrone the Olympian King. This fascinating story about Gods and men, politics and religion, loyalty and betrayal was written into a play by the father of Greek tragedy, Aeschylus, also at a time unknown—modern scholars actually doubt the play belongs to Aeschylus, and credit it to his son Euphorion. Virtuoso physical performer Kathryn Hunter takes on the role of Prometheus and leads a great Greek cast in this August highlight at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. English surtitles will be available.
