Return to Sender
Fast-fashion has changed the way we think about clothes. Trends change in a flash and it’s just so tempting to buy more clothes than we need and then discard them as soon as the next fad is out.
With their installation Return to Sender, the Nairobi-based NEST Collective calls attention to a largely unknown effect fast-fashion has on the Global South. The project was created for Documenta 15 (2022) and is now brought to the SNFCC grounds in collaboration with the National Museum of Contemporary Art. According to the collective, almost half of the very large amount of second-hand clothes that is imported to Africa is completely unusable and is sent straight to landfills.
Return to Sender, which consists of massive heaps of unusable clothing that ends up in Africa, lands at the SNFCC Esplanade for five months. The piece is accompanied by Return to Sender - Delivery Details, a video installation that provides further context on the situation.
