Summer in the City 2024
Experience the magic of summer in Athens! The City of Athens transforms every corner of the city into a vibrant cultural hub and presents an exciting programme of cultural events taking place from 16 June to 25 July. Εveryone is invited to join the festivities, as artists take over squares, museums, and parks. A total of 79 free admission events will take place in 53 locations all over the city. Most of the events and performances revolve around Greek themes and culture, making this the perfect opportunity for any visitor to get a taste of the local arts. Here's a list of some of the events that are taking place:
- The City of Athens Greek Music Workshop will perform popular melodies by Greek composers such as Manos Hadjidakis, Mikis Theodorakis, Stavros Xarchakos, Dionysis Savvopoulos, and more, on eight dates: 16/06, 8 pm, 70th Athens Elementary School; 18/06, 9 pm, Agia Aikaterini Square; 21/06, 8 pm, National Garden; 04/07 & 15/07, 9 pm, Agios Andreas Lambrini Square; 16/07, 9 pm, Agios Eleftherios Square, Acharnon; 23/07, 9 pm, Thymarakia Square; and 25/07, 9 pm, Agios Thomas Square
- 16/06, 8.30 pm: A music and dance performance by a large group of dancers, accompanied by live music, with dances and songs from the Greek islands and Asia Minor. Agios Andreas Lambrini Square
- 17/06, 9 pm: Concert by the City of Athens Big Band with a programme dedicated to timeless jazz anthems, from the golden age of swing to the present day. Keramikos Metro Station
- 18/06, 9 pm: Popular Greek folk and rebetika songs from 1935-1955 performed by an orchestra with bouzouki. Laconia Square
- 19/06, 9 pm: Banda Calda invites everyone to dance at an authentic Macedonian feast with brass melodies and traditional songs. Agios Pavlos Square
- 20/06, 9 pm: The Frog String Trio blends the musical traditions of Balkan jazz and Greek traditional music with the classical sound of a contemporary string trio. Santaroza Square
- 21/06, 7 pm: Concert by the Big Band of the Municipality of Athens with Alex Affolter as part of the celebration of European Music Day 2024. National Garden
- 26/06, 9 pm: A cappella performance by the Stringless ensemble of Thessaloniki. Koumoundourou Square
- 30/06, 9 pm: Traditional Greek celebration with the band "Xefrago Ambeli". Nathanail Square
- 03/07, 9 pm: A musical-dance programme embracing popular songs that have defined Greece’s musical identity. Dexameni Square
- 03/07, 9 pm: A tribute to the songs of Greek composers which have been loved and danced to by three generations of Greeks, set to Latin dance rhythms (rumba, samba, mambo). Victoria Square
- 05/07, 9 pm: With a creative approach, Cretan Winds arranges, improvises and presents music from the various traditions of Greece, with a special focus on the musical genres of Crete. Messologiou Square
- 07/07, 9 pm: Two internationally recognised Greek musicians and composers, Sokratis Sinopoulos and Vasilis Kostas, create a performance/cultural bridge between the musical traditions of the Mediterranean and contemporary improvisation. Ag. Asomaton Square
- 07/07, 9 pm: Tango meets rebetiko through stories of daily survival, love, passion, utopia, death and freedom. Kolonos Theatre
- 10/07, 9 pm: A mini summer jazz festival with ensembles exclusively from the contemporary Greek jazz scene, organised by the Jazz Solidarity Network. Kolonos Theatre
- 10/07, 9 pm: The Athens Municipality Symphony Orchestra, under the musical direction of Byron Fidetzis, presents a summer bill featuring dances by B. Smetana, Emil Waldteufel, and G. Meyerbeer, The Ox on the Roof by Darius Milhaud, and folk songs by M. Kalomoiris. Benaki Museum Atrium (Pireos 138)
- 13/07, 9 pm: An ethnic festival with dance and music from around the world. Keramikos Metro Station
- 17/07, 9 pm: Starting from the Greek-speaking musical culture of the Eastern Mediterranean and spanning rebetiko and songs of Smyrna, Crete, and the Aegean islands, the Polis Ensemble embarks on an emotional musical journey. Drakopoulou Park
- 17/07, 9 pm: Concert by the Athens Municipality Choir with Greek and international repertoire. Kypseli Municipal Market
- 18/07, 9 pm: Waltz and ballos, serenades and zeibekiko, all have their moment in this event. Fokionos Negri Square
