The Suppliants By Euripides
Euripides was no stranger to tragedy—actually, he was one of its fathers. And what is more tragic than a mother who cannot bury her son's body who died fighting? The Suppliants is an ancient Greek tragedy written 2,500 years ago that echoes the battle of Delium (424 BC), in which the Thebans, allies of Sparta, defeated the Athenians and for several days would not allow them to retrieve their dead and bury them properly. This iconic play about war and its victims, existential dread, dignity, faith and resilience, is a co-production of the National Theatre of Greece and Cyprus Theatre Organisation with English surtitles. It has been 43 years since the NTG last staged it and its revival is highly anticipated—not to mention the really affordable tickets for a Herodion show.
