Susan Meiselas: A Room of Their Own
The National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens is celebrating women's art this season with a series of group and solo exhibitions honouring pioneering female artists.
Shocking and impactful, the visual work of renowned documentary photographer Susan Meiselas documents the everyday reality of domestic violence victims. A member of Magnum Photos for over four decades and currently serving as the president of the Magnum Foundation, Meiselas has devoted her career to capturing global social and political issues. The exhibition currently running at EMST features two significant bodies of work: Archives of Abuse (1991–1992) and A Room of Their Own (2015–2017), both centred around domestic and family violence.
A Room of Their Own presents a complex visual narrative shedding light on the lives of domestic abuse survivors in the Black Country, UK. This collaborative project involved transient women, local artists, writers, and the community arts organisation Multistory.
Meanwhile, Archives of Abuse delves into the issue of domestic violence through a series of powerful collages based on police reports and forensic photographs. This exhibition might have you wandering around in thoughtful silence, but it's sure to spark plenty of conversations afterwards.
