The Thread
Here’s a rare thing. A modern dance production that proudly mines movements from the past. Fêted British choreographer Russell Maliphant takes the ancient Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur and plants the labyrinth as a metaphor for the paths we all walk to find our way into the light. Eighteen young Greek dancers, some trained in folk tradition; others in ballet and contemporary dance, switch between Greek folk dance and Maliphant’s electric “body work” choreography. Throw in some fabulous costumes by Greek design star Mary Katrantzou and an original score by 80s synth-rock god Vangelis (remember Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner?) and you’ve got a sizzling show in the making. The Thread has been described as a Hellenic Riverdance and most reviewers agree that its finest moments are when Maliphant deconstructs traditional Greek routines and goes for broke to the tune of Vangelis’ stunning beats.
