TiACF24: Athens Jazz
Spread the word: The summer months are no longer the main act in Athens. May is.
This is Athens - City Festival is back for its third edition this May with free admission*. The biggest annual spring festival in the Greek capital will take place throughout May and will even be stealing a few days from June. You see, this year's programme proved to be so packed, we couldn't possibly squeeze it into just 31 days. Thoroughly designed with a sustainable mindset, the festival’s rich agenda includes more than 250 events that will take place all over Athens in more diverse areas than ever before. The city's greatest jazz fiesta is back, right in time for festival season. To be fair, Athens Jazz has been kicking off festival season in our parts for the last twenty-two years, horns ablaze. The week-long, free-entrance (yup) festival will take place, as always, at the industrial complex of Technopolis in the neighbourhood of Gazi and the stages of nearby Gazarte club. As per tradition, the first day is dedicated to the local jazz scene showcasing upcoming artists and bands. This year’s open call winners are trumpet player Andreas Polyzogopoulos and his trio, avant-garde/punk jazz Mob Trio and the prolific duo of drummer Jan Van & violinist Fotis Siotas.
Update 1: Two acts have been announced so far. Meute, the eleven-piece self-proclaimed techno marching band from Germany, will perform at Technopolis on the 26th, followed by an after-party on the roof of neighbouring Gazarte. BADBADNOTGOOD, one of Canada's latest gifts to the jazz genre and the music industry in general, will bring the festival to a close on June 3rd. More acts to be announced.
Update 2: The full line-up for the festival has now been released. You can check it out here.
* Most events are free entrance and require no tickets, to the exception of some concerts that have a priced ticket, and some events that are free entrance but require pre-registration or are invitation-only. All related information to each of the festival's events can be found on the festival's website, under the page for each event.
