Spread the word: The summer months are no longer the main act in Athens. May is.
This is Athens - City Festival is back for its third edition this May with free admission*. The biggest annual spring festival in the Greek capital will take place throughout May and will even be stealing a few days from June. You see, this year's programme proved to be so packed, we couldn't possibly squeeze it into just 31 days. Thoroughly designed with a sustainable mindset, the festival’s rich agenda includes more than 250 events that will take place all over Athens in more diverse areas than ever before. Click here for our selection of the festival’s events, or head over to the official website for the full programme.
From artsy movie theatres to jasmine-scented open-air cinemas, Athens loves its celluloid moments. This year’s TiACF brings at least three movie festivals to look forward to.
16-20/05: Queer Movie Nights honours the 17th of May, the date when the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the list of psychiatric disorders. Screenings of Greek queer films and internationally acclaimed LGBTQI+ flicks will be shown at Trianon Cinema in order to raise awareness about IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphopbia, Interphobia, and Transphobia).
20-26/05: The 12th International Archaeological and Cultural Film Festival offers a blend of history, archaeology, and folklore at the Greek Film Archive. With 61 films from 22 countries, this year's lineup is packed with everything from forbidden love stories to ancient mysteries.
27/05-30/05 Greek Cinema Nights: We’re not just talking about Yorgo. In this four-day film festival, GCN will feature screenings of some great contemporary Greek flicks at the beautiful Eleftherias Park, right next to the Athens Concert Hall.
27/05-02/06: Athens’ Hispanic Film Festival (FeCHA) brings a touch of Spain, Chile, Argentina, Cuba, and other beloved Spanish-speaking countries to Athens. The programme includes some of the greatest moments in Spanish filmmaking, with screenings at Ellinis Europa Cinemas and Aello Cinemax.
* Most events are free entrance and require no tickets, to the exception of some concerts that have a priced ticket, and some events that are free entrance but require pre-registration or are invitation-only. All related information to each of the festival's events can be found on the festival's website, under the page for each event.
