Traditional Japanese Dolls
Toys get the red carpet treatment at least twice a year in Japan. Once for Japanese Girls’ Day in March when families set out costumed dolls next to food delicacies on red carpet-covered platforms to pray for their daughter’s health and happiness; and once more on Children’s Day in May, when a similar ritual unfolds. Find out more about these fascinating festivities that have shaped Japanese culture for centuries at the Benaki Toy Museum. To mark 120 years of diplomatic relations between Greece and Japan, the museum is staging an exhibition of traditional Japanese toys and dolls.
