Twentieth Century Greek Sculpture
We know so much about ancient Greek sculptures, for example that they were actually painted in bright colours! But how much does the next person know about contemporary Greek sculpture? Here comes P Gallery in posh Kolonaki. An art space dedicated exclusively to bronze sculpture, it has opened its new season with the group exhibition Twentieth Century Greek Sculpture. Get to see works by four Greek sculptors born at the beginning of the previous century, whose career peaked after the war: Costas Coulentianos, Klearchos Loukopoulos, Memos Makris and Philolaos. Inspired by the Ancient Greek classical tradition as well as by contemporary trends, they became representative of modernist Greek sculpture. Modernism as an art movement introduced, amongst other elements, abstract art to the field—something evident in all four sculptors’ works, that progressively became more abstract. Learn more about their contribution to contemporary Greek art and marvel at their inspired bronze formations, then wander the narrow streets of Kolonaki and find your way to one of its lovely cafes.
