Vassilis Vrettos: 23.07.2018
July 23rd 2018. It’s a date seared into the soul of Greece. Devastating fires ripped through two coastal towns not far from Athens—Mati and Neos Voutzas—leaving 103 people dead, 4,000 homes destroyed, and a generation of nightmares in their wake. Photographer Vassilis Vrettos bears witness to the burnt out place of his childhood and adult life in this affecting photographic essay on one of Greece’s worst natural disasters. Vrettos visited and photographed the homes of friends and acquaintances who had suffered both extensive material losses and human casualties. His photographic testimony of ruined walls and burnt houses, of dead trees, damaged cars and melted everyday items tells stories within stories about what happens after the fire has gone. See this symbolic and moving tribute at the Benaki Museum’s Pireos Street site until early December.
