Virtual Marathon Athens 2020
It’s the marathon that started them all—and on the bucket list of every self-respecting long-distance runner on the planet. The legendary 42km Athens Marathon retraces the epic journey of Phidippides (who ran from Marathon to Athens in 490BC to break the news of the Persians’ defeat) and winds up at historic Panathenaic stadium, birthplace of the Modern Olympics. Naturally, the news that this year’s electric live race is a no-go is a serious downer. But if you still want to challenge your inner Forrest Gump, you can take a crack at the Covid-19 era virtual version of the Athens Marathon. For two weeks in November, you can participate in a 42km, 10km or 5km running route in your neighbourhood park, city streets or local gym! Run your stated distance as often as you wish, in a bid to improve your time and climb the ranks of the official race results. You can rope in a family member or friend too, to spice things up. Registered runners will receive a special commemorative medal of the virtual race, an official Adidas running t-shirt and of course, a certificate to show you took part.
