Wow Pow! Bam! Comics and Painting, A Meeting at the End of the 20th Century
It doesn’t get more pop art than this. Wow Pow! Bam! Comics and Painting, A Meeting at the End of the 20th Century, a group exhibition curated by visual and comic artist Spyros Verykios and art historian Thanasis Moutsopoulos, is now running at the historic Zoumboulakis Gallery in Kolonaki. The exhibition highlights the dynamic interplay between comics and contemporary painting, showcasing how artists have drawn from the visual and narrative techniques of comic strips to expand the boundaries of art, and vice versa.
Featuring international masters like Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Art Spiegelman, as well as prominent Greek artists such as the renowned Dimitris Papaioannou (who started out as a comics creator), Spyros Verykios, and many others such as the prolific satirical cartoonist and playwright Bost, the exhibition delves into how these creatives bridged the gap between "high" and "low" art, whilst changing both mediums. By resourcefully using the comic aesthetic, these artists redefined our perception of art, crafting a new visual vocabulary that is at once attractive and provocative.
Don’t miss your dose of high-brow pow. After all, as Andy Warhol said, "pop art is for everyone."
