Avigdor Arikha: A Breath
“Art dwells in breath,” wrote Avigdor Arikha. The urgent etchings of this revered Paris-based master saved his life. As a boy, Arikha, a German-speaking Jew, survived a Ukrainian concentration camp after Red Cross delegates spotted his sketches of the horrors of the holocaust and engineered his and his sister’s escape. Arikha went on to become one of Europe's finest abstract painters and thinkers. Fifty important paintings and drawings from the late artist’s estate and private collections are on view for the first time in Greece at the Benaki Museum. Arikha's bold creations—which have been exhibited at the world’s most prestigious galleries and museums—demand an audience as much now as they did then.
