Candice Breitz—Love Story
How is it that those who weep when watching sad movies can remain unmoved in the face of real-life human suffering? This must-see video-installation by the South African artist Candice Breitz interrogates our mechanisms of identification and empathy by using Hollywood stars Julianne Moore and Alec Baldwin to re-enact true excerpts from interviews with six refugees. Watch Moore and Baldwin’s mainstream performances; then watch the original uncut interview footage of refugees and migrants (including the wrenching story of young refugee Sarah Mardini who saved 18 of her fellow Syrians from drowning but was later arrested for refugee smuggling).
