Terry Riley & Gyan Riley
"The only thing minimal about Riley’s music is the limitation of the audience”. The Who's Pete Townshend once said that, while interviewed on his love for Terry Riley's music. Terry Riley has been filed next to Philip Glass, Steve Reich and John Adams, the great makers of the minimalist genre; although many would argue that Riley led where others followed. Today, the 84-year-old pioneer performs his improvisational minimalism alongside his son, Gyan Riley, having incorporated his love for Indian ragas, Balinese gamelan, west African percussion and jazz into the mix. The result sounds chaotic, we know. Actually it is; structured, maddening, minimal chaos is to be expected at their single show at Parnassos Hall.
