Noel Coward's Present Laughter
If your idea of a ripping night out at the theatre is less Othello and more razor-sharp social comedy, Noël Coward is your guy. Escape to a giddy, bohemian whirlwind as Coward’s provocative 1943 production, Present Laughter, takes on new life with Andrew Scott (Fleabag fans will know him as “hot priest”) in the driver’s seat as flirty, melancholic actor Garry Essendine. About to depart on an overseas tour, Essendine is gripped by an identity crisis and embarks on a string of shallow relationships and much soul-searching. Director Matthew Warchus also throws in some gender swapping to spice up Coward’s original semi-autobiographical plot. You can see this highly-rated production captured at intimate range from The Old Vic in London, as part of the Athens Concert Hall’s National Theatre Live series.
