Makis Theofylaktopoulos
The bold figurative canvases of Makis Theofylaktopoulos may appear childlike at first glance, but they carry deep currents: sociopolitical tensions, personal anxieties, and a thirst for artistic risk. You’d expect no less from a painter who trained under the masterful Yiannis Moralis, one of Greece’s finest artists. Theofylaktopoulos constantly re-invents his technique; from the motorcyclists he was occupied with in the mid-1960s to the heady paintings of today with the human – or at least, human-like – at their core. See twenty-one new works from this gifted contemporary painter on display in a solo exhibition at the Citronne Gallery in Kolonaki. Hungry for more art? You’re in the right place. There are about a dozen more galleries, big and small, scattered around the slopes of Mount Lycabettus.
