Classical Christmas Concerts with Megaron On-line
Christmas and classical music go together like bread and honey. This shuttered Yuletide, we will sorely miss our annual festive ritual of getting gussied up in our winter finery to attend a live classical concert at the Athens Concert Hall. But thanks to the Megaron’s on-line platform, classical music lovers everywhere can still crank up their seasonal mojo with a sprinkling of live streamed performances throughout December. In the week before Christmas, that eternal heavyweight of Christmases Past – Bach – takes centre-stage, while in the lead-up to New Year, there are two uplifting concert highlights to enjoy:
Balthasar Neumann Choir & Ensemble, Bach Mass in B Minor (20 December at 12 noon)
The famous Balthazar Newman Ensemble and their colourful conductor Thomas Hengelbrook perform the Great Universal Liturgy of Johann Sebastian Bach, a work that the composer toiled on until the end of his life, a distillate of his art and musical masterpieces.
Traveling around the World at Christmas (26 December at 18.00)
Escort the entire family on a jolly musical jaunt, listening to Christmas melodies from all over the world and introducing the musical traditions and rhythms of these different lands.
New Year’s Opera Gala (30 December at 20.30)
Show 2020 to the door with a rousing goodbye at an evening of opera. This co-production between the Megaron and Athens State Orchestra promises tingling arias and duets from the magic world of Italian opera.
