A great Greek folklorist’s collection in a beautiful Plaka mansion.

When was it built

During 1924-1929 by architect Aristotle Zachos. It became a museum in 1981.

What's the story

Dedicated to the life and works of Aggeliki Chatzimichali, Greece’s first folklore expert. Her travels across Greece during the early 20th century and her studies on Hellenic culture are imprinted in a vast bibliography that spans over one hundred books.

Why it's important

Along with her writing work, Chatzimichali created 'Elliniko Spiti', a folk-art foundation that provided work and community for Greek women and Asia Minor refugees for 40 years. She was a major force in the Greco-Italian war of 1940, fighting in the guerilla wars in the mountains of Epirus, and sheltering 15,000 soldiers all over Athens.

Must-see

The library room for its wooden craftsmanship by Nikolaos Thomopoulos and other craftsmen who stayed at the house—and the room dedicated to the culture of the 'Sarakatsani' shepherds who fascinated Chatzimichali.

Fun fact

Great figures of Greek literature also resided here as guests, such as Kostis Palamas, Aggelos Sikelianos and Penelope Delta.
