When was it built

The collection was assembled in 1935 and moved to its current building in 1966.

What's the story

The museum's core exhibits were unearthed in Piraeus and the Attica coastline. Remnants of the 2nd century B.C. theatre of Zea can be seen in the museum gardens.

Why it's important

This often overlooked, but must-see, museum outlines the history of Piraeus from the Mycenaean to the Roman times—that’s a period of 2,200 years, during which the port city thrived as a shipyard and a major military and commercial centre.

Must-see

Unearthed during works on Piraeus sewage system in 1959, the 4th century B.C. bronze statues are especially stunning. The statues were buried in a nearby plot for safekeeping. Don’t miss the bronze statue of Artemis, possibly credited to sculptor Efranoras.

Fun fact

Among several artefacts that shed light on the everyday life of the ancients is the Metrological Relief from Salamis, a limestone slab with carvings of various measurement units of antiquity; an arm-span, a cubit, a hand-span, a rule between the armspan and the cubit, and a foot.
