What's the story

Karagiozis, the central character of Greek shadow puppet theatre, is deeply embedded in Greek popular culture—a downtrodden figure who uses deceit and flattery to outwit his Ottoman overlord.

Why it's important

This small museum contains sets, props and puppets used by the master shadow-puppet player Evgenios Spatharis. He first began touring with Karagiozis during the Second World War and his shows were popular throughout Greece right up to the early 1980s.

Fun fact

Each show is the work of a single puppeteer who controls all the puppets, their voices, and the sound effects.
