Divided into two sections, this museum will give visitors an overview of both contemporary and folk art in Greece.

When was it built

The former residence of Greek journalist Ian Vorres became a museum in 1983.

What's the story

Formerly two 19th century dwelling and a stable, it was turned into the residence and then a museum in attempt to save what Vorres saw as a disappearing Greek cultural wealth, due to rapid post-World War II urbanisation.

Why it's important

Artefacts, contemporary art and ephemera spanning two-and-a-half millennia sit side-by-side in a spirited narrative of Greek national and cultural identity, set out over six acres.

Must-see

Vorre’s personal vision, Pyrgi (meaning “Towers”), a construction named after the two tower-like buildings that are its architectural highlights. It consists of two traditional village houses and the remnants of a stable from the beginning of the 18th and early 19th centuries, and took more than 40 years of continuous work and the help of local artisans to build.

Fun fact

The new wing—housing works by major figures of 20th century Greek art—was built in the late 1970s by Michael Fotiadis: the man who would go on to design the Acropolis Museum with Bernard Tschumi.
