Eleni Pitari-Pangalou: The Unknown Drawings
The National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens is celebrating women's art this season with a series of group and solo exhibitions honouring pioneering female artists.
Eleni Pitari-Pangalou is best known for her oil paintings, including landscapes, still lifes, and portraits, all with a touch of abstract expressionism. EMST, however, focuses on something different: a series of black-and-white ink drawings from the 1960s and 1970s that are unlike anything else in her portfolio. Full of surreal, otherworldly scenes, they feature androgynous figures, fantastical creatures and dreamlike landscapes. The drawings are intricate, often filled to the brim with detail, almost as if she was afraid to leave any space blank. Pitari-Pangalou's work here is all about fantasy, mysticism and a bit of metaphysical exploration. This exhibition not only celebrates her artistic contributions, but also highlights the often overlooked role of women in the surrealist movement. Unexpected, compelling and definitely worth sharing with friends, it's like discovering a lost episode of your favourite TV series.
