The Longest Night of the Year

This festive season, Athens transforms into a sparkling wonderland with Christmas in Athens: A Fairytale Comes to Life, a city-wide celebration running from November 28 to January 10. The city’s squares and landmarks are illuminated (with energy-efficient lighting, ofcourse) and every Athenian neighbourhood gets in on the yuletide action with free events for all tastes and ages, including Christmas-themed concerts, open-air film screenings, kids activities and more.

Get ready for a very long night amidst the city’s holiday celebrations. This is Athens – City Festival invites you to celebrate the Longest Night of the Year on December 21. As night falls on the winter solstice, the energy of Athens will unfold, with events taking place in illuminated public squares, hidden arcades, and streets buzzing with music from beloved artists, dance, and the promise of a fresh start. Join locals in downtown Athens as the city comes alive across its neighbourhoods.

5 pm - midnight: Protogenous Street
From 5 pm to midnight, this lively alleyway, home to some of the city's most creative professionals, will transform into a vibrant stage for a street party. Get ready for exciting acts from the Greek alternative scene, innovative DJ sets, and various happenings and art shows. Local shops and businesses will join in, offering unique flavors and sharing the festive energy.

5 pm - midnight: Dragatsaniou Arcade 6
In the heart of the city, just across from Klafthmonos Square, the En Lefko radio station presents its annual large dance party in a secret downtown arcade. Expect an energetic night that brings together music lovers and party-goers in one unforgettable celebration.

6 pm - 11 pm: Agios Andreas Square, Lambrini
In this northernmost corner of the city, ENTEKA ATHENS brings together top DJs from the Greek electronic scene, with an impressive setup that transforms a quiet residential square into a dynamic dance venue.

6 pm - 11 pm: Gkyzi Square
George Apergis and the Reverb Sessions will curate a diverse set highlighting Athenian sounds and vibes in Gkyzi Square, just a few steps from the bustling Alexandras Avenue. This inclusive, high-energy dance party will blend the city's vibrant sounds with music, celebrating Athens' authentic alternative culture.

6 pm: Fokionos Negri & Skyrou
Melodia 99.2 radio station DJs will fill the heart of Kipseli, at Fokionos Negri, with vibrant Greek tunes. Joining them for a live music session is the contemporary street rebetes band Yagkinides, adding their authentic groove to this lively outdoor celebration.

7 pm - 9 pm: Agios Panteleimonas Square
The musical ensemble De Profundis will perform timeless works by renowned classical composers, live at Agios Panteleimonas Square. A celebration of Christmas melodies and masterpieces comes to life through accomplished musicians, offering a classically unique way to spread holiday cheer.

8 pm: Haritos Street
Athens Voice, the free press that has long been a part of Athenian culture, is bringing back the legendary Christmas parties on Haritos Street in Kolonaki. Prepare for a musical celebration continuing late into the night.

8.30 pm: Syntagma Metro Station
The grand backdrop of Syntagma Metro Station sets the stage for a captivating performance by the celebrated polyphonic ensemble Chores. Their mesmerizing vocal harmonies will enchant the space, creating an unforgettable experience for all who pass by.

10 pm - 11.30 pm: Ermou & Nikis, Syntagma
A piano recital in the heart of Athens' commercial centre, with an impressive classical piano taking centre stage on the city's busiest pedestrian street, at the crossroads near the fountain. After the shops close, melodies from classical composers will fill the air, creating a festive holiday atmosphere.

11 pm: Olympia Municipal Music Theatre "Maria Callas"
Kicking off with a live performance by singer-songwriter Giorgis Christodoulou and his band, followed by a party hosted by Kosmos 93.6 radio producers that will run until late, the foyer of the Olympia Municipal Music Theatre "Maria Callas" will transform into a lively downtown stage for the night.
