Follow our New Curated Audio Walks with Google
Welcome to Athens - a living, breathing city, home to many of the world’s finest museums alongside the best of what contemporary culture has to offer. In partnership with Google Greece and the Ministry of Tourism, a new initiative titled "Athens. The city is the museum" invites visitors to explore the city’s unique and undiscovered gems including the street art scene, diverse food experiences, music, modern architecture and lesser known neighbourhoods.
Our new, exciting project is now live at https://athens.withgoogle.com/. With the help of Google Maps and the guidance of local Athenians, we have created a series of immersive audio walks that take you through our city and introduce you to the people who breathe life into it. Each walk is curated and narrated by a local and includes personal stories and interviews with Athenians, audio installations, and flashbacks to the city’s past.
This new cooperation aims to further enhance the collective effort of the Greek Government, the Ministry of Tourism, and the City of Athens to promote a new and sustainable tourism development model, which will allow Athens to extend its tourist season beyond the summer months and strategically develop into an all-year-round destination.
Visitors get to choose among three audio walks which guide the user from one stop to the next with the help of Google Maps technology. The first walk, titled “Athens is Changing”, offers a look at the changing cultural landscape of the city, from underground skate shops to street art culture, to the ever evolving Omonia Square. Walk number two, “City of Contrasts”, tells the stories of our laid-back squares, modern art and landmark architecture along one of Athens’ busiest arterial avenues. Finally, our third walk, titled “Beneath the Acropolis”, invites the user to experience the intriguing blend of living history and contemporary attitude that characterises Athens’ inner city neighbourhoods that are close to the historic centre.
