Athens was crowned Europe's Leading City Break Destination 2024 at the World Travel Awards. The National Garden of Athens is a central green oasis of rare flora and fauna next door to the Greek Parliament. Formerly The Royal Garden, it was commissioned in 1838 by Queen Amalia and completed by 1840. It was originally a private area of the palace that was declared a public space in 1927. Today, the 158,000 sqm park is home to over 7,000 trees and 40,000 shrubs, along with hundreds of species of birds, fish, and turtles. The garden houses 519 plant species, of which 100 are native to Greece. An ongoing regeneration project that will make the garden more sustainable began in 2022. The wholly renovated park will be delivered in sections so that the garden remains accessible at all stages of construction.
