The New Lighting of the Acropolis
In dark times, by lighting the Acropolis, you light up the world.
As a global pandemic alters the way we live, work and dream, there are those things that remain fixed. Immutable ideas and everlasting symbols that act as beacons of hope and equip us with courage and a clearer grasp of our small yet vital role in a bigger picture. The Acropolis has stood tall for 2.500 years. It has witnessed everything that any Athenian has, with the gaze of a sovereign and the warmth of a dear friend. This too shall pass, it seems to say. And who are we to argue?
In this dim hour, Athens shines a new light on its world-famous icon. It has been tested for months and now it's time for the Acropolis to glow brighter than ever before. The unveiling of the new lighting system will take place on Wednesday, September 30 at 20.00. It is the work of award-wining lighting designer Eleftheria Deko—she won an EMMY award for her lighting at the opening and closing ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games—and is donated by the Onassis Foundation.
If you're in Athens, you can catch the unveiling... well, from literally anywhere. Pnyx, Lycabettus Hill and Philopappou Hill are ideal vantage points. Want to keep it casual and urban? Just walk down Patission Avenue; the lady can be seen clear as day, framed by the neighbourhood's gorgeous neoclassical buildings. The ceremony will, of course, be broadcast online at the Onassis Foundation's YouTube channel, so set your reminder.
