Aegean Desert
What does the desert of Qatar have in common with the Aegean Sea ?
Both have been mighty stages of human and natural history; both have fired artistic adulation down the centuries. After studying the link between these two vast and fluid forces, Prince Nikolaos created two experiential installations in Athens and Doha, in which pictures from the Qatari desert and photographs of the Aegean Sea will be exhibited side by side. The works underline the beauty and the individual character of variegated landscapes, while at times, distinguishing features - sand and water - are fused in playful illusions. In Athens, the photographs will be exhibited in a Bedouin tent (bait al shaar) in the courtyard of the Benaki Museum of Islamic Art, and enriched by regional music. In Doha, they’ll be shown in a traditional windmill of the Aegean Sea, to be erected in the Katara Cultural Village.
