Αthens Epidaurus Festival 2022: Ajax
Let’s talk about first times. Artistically, you little devils. Athens Epidaurus Festival welcomes Greek actor Argyris Xafis in his first directorial attempt at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, where he will go up against a giant: Sophocles’ Ajax. Probably the first of his seven surviving plays, Sophocles broke new ground with Ajax when he decided that his hero’s death would be shown on stage. To the non-Homer fans out there, Ajax is one of the greatest heroes of the Iliad, bested only by Achilles himself (well, and Odysseus when they fought over Achilles’ armour). Add some unwarranted divine intervention, hubris and Greek honour to the mix and there you have it; a proper Epidaurus experience (and quite the task for Xafis.)
With English subtitles.
