Antonis Donef: Symbols of Selflessness
Antonis Donef's intricate collages depict surreal worlds; at first glance, these disorienting fractals do not resemble ordinary maps, but on closer inspection one begins to notice startling similarities to the real world. His work is meant to challenge and disorientate. After 2021's colourful Chronos at Kalfayan Galleries, Donef is back with another solo exhibition, Symbols of Selflessness, a return to monochrome, intricate collages. Using his signature technique of cutting vintage maps into stripes and rearranging them, his collages create new "countries" with altered geographical boundaries. Donef's latest work is made up of layer upon layer of collaged paper, challenging our perspective on the notion of knowledge, how it's produced and disseminated in contemporary society.
