Francesca Cataldi: I Work
What attracts artists to using unconventional materials? As Italian artist Francesca Cataldi puts it: “It’s the materials that look for me, not me looking for the materials. They come to me and spark the idea." Since the 1970s, she has been working on two-dimensional and three-dimensional works made of unconventional materials such as cement, wire, tar, resin, cellulose and fibreglass. At Francesca Cataldi: I Work, an exhibition held at Gramma_Epsilon Gallery, curated by Paolo Cortese and sanctioned by the Italian Cultural Institute of Athens, visitors will get the chance to see 40 of her artworks that weave together contrasting textures and layers. Cataldi, who can become obsessed with the different materials she comes across, devotes a long time to research and experimenting with them. The exhibition is part of the project “Le ragazze di Mirella” (Mirella’s girls) that Gramma_Epsilon Gallery has dedicated to influential sculptor, poet, and performance artist Mirella Bentivoglio and all the artists she supported.
