Stories of Our Lives: in Search of Queer Sanctuaries
If you’ve visited the Return to Sender outdoor installation at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, then you’re familiar with the work of the Nest Collective. Stories of Our Lives: In Search of Queer Sanctuaries, the second part of their project, is currently on display at the National Museum of Contemporary Art. Created especially for the museum, the site-specific installation delves into the reality of queer and cross-identity Kenyan, African and Black people. The Collective employs photographs, illustrations, soundscapes and excerpts transcribed from hundreds of intimate conversations to shed light on the life challenges the LGBTQ+ community faces in Kenya. An anthology film featuring stories from Kenya's queer community (the film is banned in Kenya as “it promotes homosexuality that is contrary to national norms and values,”) is also part of the exhibition.
