Antrea Tzourovits: Counting Rests
Kalfayan Galleries is hosting Counting Rests, a solo exhibition by artist Antrea Tzourovits. The exhibition title alludes to musical pauses in notation, symbolising the artist's intention to create a "symphony of silence." Tzourovits was inspired by his childhood in Serbia Montenegro, particularly the contrasting memories of the celebrations for FR Yugoslavia's victory in the 1998 FIBA World Championship and the tragic events caused by the NATO bombing, a little while after.
Counting Rests focuses on how human memory, especially sound memory, shapes our personal and collective sense of reality, and ponders on how play and conflict could possibly coexist. The artist translates his six years of experience in instrument making into intricate wooden paintings, sculptures, and sculptural installations. Also, historic pre-war moulds engage in a dialogue with the artist's new moulds, bridging the past and present. His artistic practice is rooted in the philosophical school of object-oriented ontology, for which materials are considered carriers of memory. For example, he uses basketball floor material to create sculptures that blend elements of basketballs and musical instruments.
