A.O. – B.C. An Audiovisual Diary
Athens threw a belter of an Olympic Games in 2004. The whole world applauded. The Greek capital basked in the afterglow until five years later, the lights went out and the mother of Western culture; cradle of European thinking; embarked on its long painful path of austerity. Here’s an evocative group show that traces the footprints of this dramatic transition and examines how art helped mould the narrative of modern Greece during this interlude – both here and abroad – through a rich archive of source material from artists, filmmakers, musicians and designers. What new concepts were added to the glossary of Greece to capture its post-Olympics, pre-crisis state? How do these new narratives synch up with the country’s profound ancient heritage? A fascinating exhibition staged across two influential art spaces: Athens School of Fine Arts and State of Concept, a non-profit cultural landmark in a former clothing workshop in cool Koukaki. Films and video displays are translated into English.
