The Artist on the Composer: Yorgos Lanthimos
If you loved The Favourite (and gobbled up every other wacky and wonderful romp that Yorgos Lanthimos has ever led you on), listen up. The internationally-feted Greek director has turned his talents to conjuring a new short film, starring Emma Stone, who was among his trio of female leads in The Favourite.
Shot exclusively on the Greek island of Tinos in February 2020, and also featuring the seriously good French thesp Damien Bonnard, you can catch Bleat when it’s screened at the splendid Stavros Niarchos Hall in May to the accompaniment of live orchestral music, as part of the SNFCC’s Artist on the Composer series.
A collaboration of the Greek National Opera and contemporary culture champion NEON, the project establishes a conversation between cutting-edge visual artists like Lanthimos and classical musical compositions, in a bid to expose opera to new ears. Since conquering Cannes with his dystopian family tale Dogtooth in 2009, Lanthimos has become one of the most sought-after creative minds in cinema today. The Favourite won global attention (and an Oscar for Olivia Colman).
Accompanying Lanthimos’ latest tumble down the rabbit hole will be works by J. S. Bach /Knut Nystedt, and Toshio Hosokawa, to be performed live inside the Stavros Niarchos Hall.
