Carnival and Clean Monday at the SNFCC
It’s an exciting and diverse carnival season at the SNFCC. Athens' biggest cultural hub has a rich Apokries (Greek carnival) agenda planned for visitors and locals alike, as music performances and family happenings set the tone for a vibrant two-day celebration at various parts of the centre’s park.
Carnival Sunday’s programme kicks off at noon with brass band Hasta Brassta and their cheerful covers of popular songs. Hermaphrodite's Child follow up with surf rock and rock’n’roll tunes at the Great Lawn. Bloco Swingueira will be around all day at various spots around the park, summoning Brazilian and afro grooves.
On Clean Monday things get a lot more local, as Professor of Ethnomusicology Lambros Liavas curates a marvellous line-up of traditional Greek dances from all over the country with an open invitation to the public to join in. Violin virtuoso Nikos Economides together with a band of local musicians and dancers (from the island of Lesvos, as well!) will get dances such as the hasapiko, syrto, kalamatiano, ballos and others started. Don’t know the steps to these? Just grab a local by the hand and step inside the dancing circle, they will handle the rest.
