Carnival at Kypseli Municipal Market

It’s time for colourful costumes, confetti explosions and dancing in the streets. Apokries (our version of carnival) is just around the corner which means that the city is getting ready for a three-week celebration that allows for nothing except good vibes. The City of Athens has planned a jam-packed festive agenda for all types, with all sorts of events spread around every neighbourhood. Follow the sound of the bands playing at the city’s squares, take part in a street parade or a folklore custom revival, and sign up for face-painting shenanigans or any of the numerous games set up for your young ones. Just before the carnival celebrations come to a peak on Carnival Sunday and Clean Monday, the amazing people of Kypseli Municipal Market have something special planned for everyone. Kypseli's favourite social hub will be celebrating Tsiknopempti, with Nomade et Sauvage (the cool people who host nomadic feasts, as well as cooking and harvesting workshops in the wild) who will be providing the menu. The fiesta will be soundtracked by Toursi group and their brass instruments, and the Kinteria group which is known for reviving traditional Greek music with their covers.

On Wednesday, March 13th, traditional dance groups of the area will perform traditional dances and satirical songs from various Greek regions, from Crete all the way to Thrace, Epirus and the Aegean Islands.

But, it’s not all about folk customs. Kypseli Beat returns to the Kypseli hub for a full weekend. With fresh DJ sets curated by dance crews Needless and Street Outdoors, there will be dancing, eating, drinking and even shopping to keep you going just before the relaxing Clean Monday.
